redhill-logo55+pxWelcome to Red Hill Publishing, where we create books for family businesses.

We excel at every aspect of telling the remarkable story of your family enterprise, from founding to present day. Interviewing key family members, crafting an insightful narrative, and presenting it in a handcrafted book, each step that we take is a unique, purposeful activity designed with one thing in mind.

To make sure your story is told, and presented, beautifully.

Conventional wisdom says that every product or service must solve a problem.

The problem our handcrafted legacy memoirs solve is this:

Given enough time, your accomplishments, your struggles, your passions and even your entire life will be forgotten. Gone. Just like that. Each memory of you as fleeting as a sunset.

Not so with a handcrafted book.

Our solution to fading memories and short attention spans and children too busy to engage and grandchildren too young to ask and great-grandchildren not yet born is a handcrafted legacy memoir—a piece of history with literary heft, bound together by a master bookmaker, resulting in a work of fine art. A work guaranteed to preserve the key events of your life and work, your reflections and achievements, in a tangible keepsake capable of lasting millennia.

The point of all this effort is simple:

To ensure you will always be remembered.

Who We Work With

Our last client was a multinational jewelry and timepiece company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

A family business started in 1890, the first generation moved from Lebanon to New York City and spent twenty years in America before moving back to Beirut. The second generation opened stores in Saudi Arabia and quickly claimed the role of finest jeweler in the kingdom. The third generation transported the headquarters to Geneva and started producing watches. Today, the fourth generation runs the show producing innovative designs for A-list celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Amy Adams, Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, and others.

Red Hill Publishing was commissioned to do what we do best—create a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted legacy memoir to commemorate the company’s 125 years in business.

Our final product was nothing less than a rare gem in the book world and a remarkable artistic statement.

bookcoversBefore the jewelry memoir, we wrote a book for Glenfiddich, maker of Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky, called Family Spirit, and prior to that edited a business tale about the demise of media company Fairfax, publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald, called Killing Fairfax, and before that we interviewed the wife of a dying father and ghostwrote sections of a memoir about love in the face of terminal illness called Days Like These. (This last is an emotional story guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye.)

The list goes on, but you get the point.

At Red Hill Publishing, we do one thing and we do it like no other bookmaker on the planet.

We create handcrafted legacy memoirs that turn your life, family, and business stories into a compelling must-read.

Who We Are

I’m Sally Collings, founder of Red Hill Publishing.

I’ve written six books under my own name and ghostwritten more than a dozen handcrafted legacy memoirs in the last decade or so.

Before I started Red Hill Publishing, I spent several years as a senior editor with HarperCollins, and prior to that a stint as editorial director with leading UK publisher Amber Books, and a shorter stint as executive editor with Websters Multimedia in London.

I include this two-sentence bio not to impress, but because it feels, well, obligatory. If you are looking for creds, I have them.

Now for the essentials, and by that I mean what makes me tick.

Some years ago, my parents died.

Mum on Wednesday of lung cancer. Dad on Friday of drowning. The suddenness of both deaths in the same week was shocking.

Here’s the thing.

Mum and dad weren’t talkers. Never once did I hear some exotic tale of their younger selves, some spicy bit of oral history floating across the kitchen table. They kept no journals. No secret diaries. No photos. Nothing.

The saddest part is that when they died, their stories died with them.

Since their deaths, I’ve longed to know more about them, to read or hear stories in their own voice from their own quirky point of view about youthful antics or lost love or, for Dad, what it was like to serve as a rank and file soldier in Papua New Guinea during World War II.

That loss affected me profoundly, and put me on a new path—helping authors like you create exceptional handcrafted legacy memoirs.

Today, only a few years after opening our doors, Red Hill Publishing is one of the premier artisan bookmakers in the United States.

What We Do

At its simplest, we make sure you will always be remembered.

We do more than that, of course.

First, we conduct a series of interviews and record the calls. For most clients, we need about 30 hours of interviews.

We transcribe the recordings and start the writing process—turning that bundle of stories, notes, and journals into a cohesive narrative so good it’s impossible to put down.

Next, we hand the manuscript over to professional editors and proofreaders until the text is perfect. And finally, we ship the whole shebang to a printer who wraps your story in a hand-bound book.

When it comes to printing and binding, our real speciality is hand-bound books.

Believe it or not, our hand-bound books are made one book at a time. By a person, not a machine.

You heard me right.

Our most discerning clients don’t want mass produced. They want limited edition, super small print runs, where each book is made by hand.

Our clients want a work of art, which is exactly what we deliver.

Another thing:

Our clients aren’t in a hurry. Another way to say this is they value quality over speed. I know of many publishers who can crank out a book in less than a year. The reason is simple: the books are rushed, the writing sluggish, editing sometimes nonexistent, bookbinding automated, and the overall quality poor. Some of these books are embarrassingly bad.

Red Hill Publishing, on the other hand, is in the business of making art.

And we invite you to join us on that journey.

  • Interviews

One month. Or, it takes as long as it takes. In addition to recorded interviews, we’ll gather all of your notes, journals, emails, photos, old videos and anything else you care to share.

  • Transcription

We have the recordings professionally transcribed into a Word document. Check this out. An hour-long interview turns into 40 pages or so of raw transcript. That means 30 hours of interviews is upwards of 1,200 pages of material we must slim down to around 200 pages of compelling story.

Five months. It took you forty or sixty or eighty years to create your memories, and it will only take us around five months to get it all down on paper.

Two months. We don’t rely on just one editor and one proofreader, but at least two of each.

  • Book Design & Layout

One month. Turning a clumsy Word doc into a Picasso is no easy task. We are specialists at heading fonts, body type, layout, illustrations and all the other graphic elements needed to turn fifty thousand words into a visual work of art.

  • PRINTING & Binding

Three months. Making each book by hand takes time. Would you have it any other way?

Total elapsed time: Twelve months. You get your books fresh off the press or directly from the artisan bookbinder. All wrapped in a giant red bow.

I’ve given you a lot to think about. I understand that.

So let me leave you with one last thought.

How do you want to be remembered?

I’m not being flippant. I am suggesting that you can influence how your family, friends, and colleagues remember you by writing it down, by telling your story in your words, and by recording your life experiences—the good and the bad, the lessons learned and the cautionary tales—for others to read long after you are gone.

So what’s stopping you?

If you decide to move forward, I’m here to help.
