NEW PUBLISHING BUSINESS MODEL FROM BRISBANE'S RED HILL ATTRACTS INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM
Independent Brisbane book publisher, Red Hill Publishing, is turning heads in the US with its unconventional business model. On his website The Book Designer, respected book publishing blogger and founder of California’s Marin Bookworks, Joel Friedlander, applauded the company’s progressive business model for adapting to a changing publishing industry. In his piece titled ‘Indie publishing in Australia’ Friedlander says
'We desperately need new models of how publishers and authors can work together … Red Hill [seems] to be taking the smartest course I’ve seen to make the most of the current conditions in publishing.
'Red Hill manages to leverage the strengths of traditional publishing with the flexibility and diversity that comes with sponsored publishing. I’ve been excited about new models of publishing emerging where author and publisher entered into more of a real, eye-level partnership, each utilizing their own strengths to work for the success of the book.'
Operating in an author-retained rights system, Red Hill Publishing offers their clients a far higher percentage of profits than big name publishers using a royalties-based model. Their authors retain their rights – and the majority of profits – in their books. As co-founder Sally Collings explains, ‘authors take a financial risk by contributing to production costs, and in return keep their rights and retain the spoils. They hang on to almost 90 per cent of revenue. So, on a $24.95 book, that’s almost $22 in the bank for each copy sold.’
Many major publishers retain up to 90% of profits which means authors may make as little as $3 per book sold.
Although Red Hill Publishing takes a radically different route to traditional book publishers, they certainly aren’t seen as ‘the enemy’. Sally Collings is also an author in her own right (Sophie’s Journey, Positive, The World According to Kids), and her books are published through HarperCollins. ‘I want to have a publisher who is not me – that outside perspective is so important,’ Sally says.
